Greek Words and THE Revelation from 1:1-11

I was asked to list some of the Greek words I used in last night’s (June 7) study of The Revelation 1:1-11. I love to use the original Greek because it gives us the literal meaning of the word and helps us understand scripture much better. With that in mind, here are a few of those from last night.

αποκαλυψις: Prounounced Apokalupsis. (Verse 1) It is from this that we get the word Apocalypse, which is a popular word used to refer to the book, and maybe even more, to the End Time. But the important thing is the meaning. It means: “unveiling or uncovering; a disclosure of knowledge; a lifting of the veil; revealing; revelation.” So, yes God wants us to know and understand the things He gave us about the future in this Book!

αποκαλυψις ιησου χριστου: Apokalupsis Iasou Christou. (Verse 1) Revelation Jesus Christ. In the Greek, there is no preposition, so it can have various interpretations: The Revelation of, by, about, etc. Jesus Christ. Most use “of.” What matters is knowing this Book is all about Jesus!

αγγελου: Aggelou: Messenger. We get the word angel from this word. I believe this was the Angel Gabriel in verse 1. He is God’s Messenger Angel!

μακαριος: Makarios: Blessed or Happy. Verse 4 says the one who reads this book, and the one who hears it AND takes it to heart are blessed or happy!

μαρτυς: Martus: Witness or Martyr. Verse 5 says Jesus was the “faithful witness,” the one who gave his life for us on the cross. Thank God!

αγαπωντι: Agaponti. From Agape, sacrificial love. Verse 5 uses that word for Jesus love for us. He definitely loved us and still loves us sacrificially!

λυσαντι: Lousanti, meaning to loose or set free. Verse 5 also says Jesus “loosed us, or set us free” from our sins!

I think that’s about it for the Greek words. I would love for you to fall in love with Greek through this study. That doesn’t mean you have to learn the language. But at times, you can search for a word to get the full meaning. Greek is so much more expressive than English!

One final word: Thanks to all of you for commenting THE if you were watching live or ONE if you watched later. I am loving watching those ONES still coming in! If you haven’t realized it yet, I chose those words to emphasize the importance of understanding the Book is THE Revelation and not Revelations, or a series of revelations. Let’s all practice calling it The Revelation or just Revelation (singular) during this study. I had to learn to do that myself several years ago, so I know you can get it! Now, don’t worry, God won’t be mad at you if you don’t. But I would love it, if you do! 🙂 I look forward to seeing you next Sunday at 8pm as we finish Chapter 1.
